I don't think we can honestly say that we are the only good people, or even that we are better at being good than others. I (and I believe all Christians) believe that I cannot be good apart from God because God is good. So while I don't think belief in God creates the desire to be good, I do believe that apart from God I cannot be good. Of course there is much evidence that people who do not believe in God are still good people, and I do not want to come across as saying they (you) aren't. I have met as many non-believers as believers who are good and do good. To be honest, the reason for my post was more about wondering why we do tend to claim the monopoly on being good. I don’t think we can honestly say that we are the only good people, or even that we are better at being good than others.
I (and I believe all Christians) believe that I cannot be good apart from God because God is good. So while I don’t think belief in God creates the desire to be good, I do believe that apart from God I cannot be good.
